Nancy Pelosi has landed in Taiwan.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives thus defies China’s threats ahead of the visit.

“Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors the United States’ unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s democracy,” the 82-year-old said in a statement.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has landed in Taiwan, AP writes. Just before 23.00 local time (17.00 Swedish time), the 82-year-old’s plane landed.

She was received by Taiwanese representatives.

Shortly after she landed, Pelosi left one statement on the government website.

“Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors the unwavering commitment of the United States to support Taiwan’s democracy,” she said.

“Promote common interests”

In the statement, she also says that the visit to Asia focuses on security, economy and democracy.

“Our discussions with the leadership in Taiwan will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner as well as advancing our shared interests, including promoting a free and open Pacific region,” she said.

During the day, China has repeated its warnings that the visit will have consequences.
