Spaniard Rafael Nadal may not be able to participate at Roland Garros due to a new back injury.
While Rafael Nadal and his clan have not yet formalized the Mallorcan’s withdrawal from the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo, he could miss much more than the return tournament on clay according to the Spanish press. In fact, the Catalan daily Sport announced this Thursday, April 4 that the player with 14 titles to Roland Garros had not recovered from his back injury, which prevented him from participating in the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments a few weeks ago. According to information from the newspaper, the Spaniard could even be away from the courts for another six weeks. This injury would therefore mean his withdrawal from Monte-Carlo, but also from the two Spanish clay court tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid. Always according to Sportthe Majorcan hopes to be able to return for the master 1000 in Rome, scheduled between May 6 and 19.
For several days, the rumor of Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from Monte-Carlo had already been circulating. The Spaniard had in fact still not arrived on the Rock, while the tournament begins this Sunday, April 7. After regularly showing his recovery on social networks in recent weeks, Nadal had also stopped posting. He also showed reservations about his return, during an event organized by his foundation, declaring “I’m going to do my best to try to start the season on clay, which is my goal, but I don’t want to not comment on my return because lately it has become difficult for me to make predictions.”
Less than two months before the Roland Garros grand slam tournament, Rafael Nadal’s participation therefore seems compromised. While this 2024 season should be the last of his career, the man who won 22 grand slam titles including 14 at Porte d’Auteuil has not participated in an official match since January 5 and his quarter-final in Brisbane.
