During November, the number of reports of mysterious objects in the skies of the northwestern United States has increased sharply.
Over 5,000 sightings have been received, mainly from the states of New Jersey and New York, leading to a flood of conspiracy theories.
– There is a big question mark about who flies these drones and what they want, says Clas Svahn, chairman of UFO Sweden.
On various forums, conspiracy theories about everything from aliens to foreign powers have flared up. At the same time, the authorities in New Jersey have decided to ban all drone flights in certain areas to facilitate the investigations and get a clearer picture of what is happening.
– You want to clear out everything else and see who really penetrates the military field, says Clas Svahn.
“Political stab at Biden”
For the FBI and other authorities, it is now a matter of identifying the hundreds of sightings that differ from usual explanations such as stars, airplanes and planets. Of the 5,000 reports, only a small number are considered to be truly interesting.
– There are a million drone licenses in the US and many fly at night. These hundred could be real drones, and it is the FBI’s task to find out who is flying them, notes Clas Svahn.
At the same time, US president-elect Donald Trump believes that it is the incumbent power that withholds information, and that the current president and the military know where the drones are coming from.
– He takes every chance to make a political stab at Biden and make the administration suspicious, says Clas Svahn.
Similar phenomenon in Sweden
Similar phenomena have also been reported in Sweden. Earlier this year, Arlanda Airport was closed for a couple of nights due to suspected drones in the airspace. The police later stated that it was probably a case of misunderstanding.
– We are not very good at recognizing things in the sky. People trigger each other and report anything they think could be a drone, says Clas Svahn.
For the public, there is no cause for concern, says Clas Svahn. But the question marks remain.
– It is important that we find out who is flying the drones and why. But I don’t think there is any danger to national security.
