Myanmar’s military junta: another six-month extension to the state of emergency | News in brief

Myanmar’s military junta decided to extend the state of emergency that has been in place since 2021 for another half year.

Myanmar’s military junta announced that the country’s state of emergency will continue for another half year. Myanmar has been in a state of emergency since 2021, when a military junta seized power from an elected Aung San Suu Kyi from the government.

The state of emergency initially lasted for a year, and since then it has been extended every six months at a time.

The military junta is currently facing a big challenge as rebel forces made up of ethnic minorities and people fighting for democracy are taking over the sector in different parts of the country.

Myawaddy media, run by the military junta, says that the extension of the state of emergency is due to the fact that the junta needs more time to collect the country’s population data so that it can compile voter lists for the upcoming elections. According to the military junta, “peace and stability” must be restored to the country due to the ongoing “terrorist activities”.

The military junta has said that it will hold elections in the country next year. The military junta’s previous election promises have not been kept, but have been postponed due to the ongoing anti-rebel battles.
