“My thighs hurt” – An actor had to suffer in Red Dead Redemption 2 so that you could travel in secret

Red Dead Redemption 2 is celebrated for its high level of detail. The game tries to be as realistic as possible. That’s why the characters were played by real actors who brought their movements into the game using motion capture technology. One movement caused a particularly painful experience.

What hurt the actors the most? In an interview with Gamology, Roger Clark revealed which exercise was particularly challenging for him. The actor plays the main character Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 and had to record a lot of movements so that players could run with him through the Wild West.

The hardest part was running while crouching. Clark was out of action for several days:

  • ran
  • sneaked
  • ran in a crouch
  • ran with a gun
  • ran with two pistols
  • ran with a rifle in a crouch
  • Not only does the whole thing sound like a workout, it was apparently very strenuous indeed. Clark reports that his thighs hurt three days later. And all of this is just so that the enemies in Red Dead Redemption 2 don’t spot you right away.

But Clark thinks that there is something good about Rockstar putting so much attention to detail into it. MeinMMO has listed some examples for you. But apart from the pain, the high level of detail also has something good about it, Clark thinks.

You can see what the attention to detail looks like in the following trailer:

Clark is happy that Arthur Morgan is like him

Why is that a good thing? Clark is happy that the protagonist of the game imitates his movements. The character walks like the actor. He even got the habit of rubbing his nose from Clark.

However, this also comes at a high price. According to Clark, actors often doubt themselves. He often thinks about what he has produced at work a week or two later.

Sometimes he thinks that his movements aren’t good enough and that he should have done something differently. For example, he regrets a scene with Arthur Morgan, which we don’t want to spoil for you at this point.

Roger Clark not only lent Arthur Morgan his movements, but also his voice. The actor was called back into the recording studio for some scenes because he spoke too intimately with his horse: Cowboy in Red Dead Redemption 2 spoke too sexily with horse, had to re-record
