This Thursday, June 27, Amazon’s streaming platform launches My Lady Jane, adaptation of the literary saga written by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows. Transposed into series by author Gemma Burgess (Brooklyn Girls) alongside Meredith Glynn (The Boys), the series is directed in part by Jamie Babbit (Only Murders in the Building).
The history is perfectly assumed in this series which mixes romance, historical plot and fantasy. My Lady Jane revisits the tragic fate of Jeanne/Jane Grey, nicknamed the Nine Day Queen. The latter reigned for just over a week, in theEngland of 1553, before being dispossessed of her title by Mary ID before being executed. But what if it were otherwise?
Lovers of classic historical romances, move on, since My Lady Jane uses strong biases from which one should suspend one’s disbelief. The series revisits with humor and a pop aesthetic the story of this fallen historical figure, all while adding a good dose of romance, a perfectly assumed feminist statement and also several fantastic elements which can surprise in a program of this kind.
In this uchronistic romance tinged with fantasy, the production has chosen to entrust the main roles to Emily Bader (Paranormal activity: Next of Min) and Edward Bluemel (Killing Eve). They are surrounded by seasoned actors like Dominic Cooper (Tamara Drewe, Captain America: First Avenger) or Anna Chancellor (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pennyworth). What is the plot of My Lady Jane ?
Lady Jane Gray was Queen of England in July 1553 for… nine days before being chased out by Mary Tudor who seized the throne and ordered her beheading as well as that of her husband Guildford. But in this alternate version of the history of English royalty, none of that happens: Henry VIII does not die of tuberculosis and Lady Jane and her husband survive, although hunted by their envious enemies.
