The Dane Rasmus “Caps” Winther (24) is the best player in League of Legends outside of Asia. Once again, mid laner Caps and his team G2 are the only hope in the West of winning anything at the LoL World Championships, LoL World 2024. In an interview, Caps talks about opportunities and goals.
How good is Caps? Caps is considered an exceptional player in LoL. He is one of the few Western players, perhaps the only one, who can compete with the world’s top players playing in the LCK and LPL. Some go so far as to say: G2 is the only team in the West that puts Europe ahead of the USA in terms of playing strength and that is solely due to caps.
In 2019, Caps reached the LoL Worlds final, but lost to Doinb and FunPlus Phoenix. The then edition of G2 with Perkz, Jankos and Caps was probably the strongest non-Asian team in modern LoL times. Nevertheless, there was no country against FunPlus Phoenix back then.
For a few years now and after some of G2’s top players got old and left the club, G2 has no longer had enough to play a major role internationally. Since 2021, the results have been sobering. If Caps has his way, that will change in 2024.
Caps wants to win Worlds once and be the best before he retires
This is what he says to his former self: In an interview with Dexerto, Caps talks about how he got a taste for becoming a pro in Lol:
I mean, for me it’s worlds apart. It’s a good feeling to be here. In Season 3, I saw Faker win Worlds and I thought, ‘Oh, I want that to be me. Since then I have only spawned in solo queue. I ended up dropping out of school and joining Fnatic in 2017, so I came in with the thought that I wanted to win Worlds and be the best. So until I achieve that, I can’t just stop. I can’t stop struggling. I really want to achieve this and I will do everything in my power to achieve it.
Dexerto then asks that he has been the best player in Europe for so long. He should be happy with his career, but Caps replies:
I mean, I don’t want to say I’m not happy, because that can feel disrespectful to others in a way, right? At the end of the day, it’s a competition. Not everyone can win. But if I gave 16 or 17 year old Caps the phone and told him I haven’t won yet, he would definitely be mad at me. I have to win at least once.
Moving to South Korea or China, like his former teammate Rekkles, and perhaps becoming world champion is out of the question for Caps. That would feel like cheating. He wants to do it with a team from Europe.
But he misses strong competition in Europe. He currently learns the most when he plays against mid laners from the LCK or LPL. He learned a lot from Perkz – having someone like that again would be great.
G2 still lacks proper access to the meta
How does he see his chance? He doesn’t actually sound very confident. In training matches, the scrims, things are currently only going mixed. You’re still looking for the right grip on the meta. Nevertheless, Caps says he believes they will make it far into the tournament. Oh well.
What are his chances this year? Honestly, not that good. Caps and G2 are just outsiders at LoL Worlds. The focus of fans and experts is on completely different players: Who will win LoL Worlds 2024? Two professionals finally want to replace Faker
