In a meeting in New York on Wednesday, a usually highly divided Security Council was able to rally around a council statement expressing “deep concern” over Israel’s law, which effectively bans the UN body from operating in Palestinian areas of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.

Even the US, which has veto power in the council, backed the harsh wording of “a strong warning against attempts to dismantle or reduce UNRWA’s efforts and mandate”.

The UN’s aid organization for refugees in Palestinian territories is effectively stopped from operating in several Palestinian territories following a decision in Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

The Security Council also called on Israel to “fulfil international obligations”, as well as to “respect the immunities and privileges” of the UN organization.

Unrwa has around 30,000 employees and operates in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria where Palestinian refugees are located.
