Community Living campaign promotes inclusion, belonging
You don’t need to be an artist to take part in the Community Living Access mural project, but you do need an interest in your community.
May is Community Living Month in Ontario. The local organization is inviting the public to celebrate through the creation of a mural on the side of the agency’s building at 89 Culver St. in downtown Simcoe.
“May is Community Living Month right across Ontario, we’re not just showcasing community living agencies, but the importance of community, belonging and engagement,” Don Lawson, community relations official at Community Living Access. “With that, we thought about what would be unique and fun way for us to try and engage our community, we really want to engage people and show the importance of what makes up a vibrant community.”
Community Living Access is a non-profit charity organization that provides services and support for individuals with developmental disabilities.
The local organization invites all individuals to leave their mark on the mural whether it’s a word or symbol of what they think represents a vibrant community.
“You don’t have to be an artist to take part in this, it’s really just about leaving your mark, this will be engaging for everyone,” said Lawson.
The mural will measure 10 by 30 feet. All supplies will be provided.
“We just need your vision of what a vibrant community looks like to you,” said Lawson.
A memorial garden mural will also be added to the property and painted by an artist along with support from the BIA. The mural will face the facility’s green space area for individuals to honor those who have supported the organization over the past 30 years.
Both murals will be completed by the end of the month.
The project began on Sunday and is set to continue on May 17 and 19 from 1 pm to 7 pm
Lawson said that individuals who are unable to attend on the selected dates can contact him via email or phone to plan an alternative day or time.
Depending on how much space is left on the mural, the project may continue into the week of May 23.
