Multinational forces have not succeeded in stabilizing the situation in Haiti. Instead, the violence caused by gangs accelerated at the end of last year.
Security forces from Guatemala and El Salvador have arrived in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, officials say. The troops are supposed to assist multinational security forces supported by the UN and the United States, which are in Haiti to stabilize the country’s security situation.
President of the Haitian Transitional Administration Leslie VoltairePrime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime as well as the US ambassador Dennis Hankins received a group of about 80 people at Port-au-Prince airport.
“The troops have arrived to reinforce the multinational forces that are fighting the gangsters and weapons in the country,” the transitional administration said in a statement.
The capital of Haiti, located in the Caribbean, is largely controlled by violent and heavily armed criminal groups.
A multinational operation led by Kenya to support the Haitian police has not reduced the violence in the country. Instead, criminal groups increased their attacks and took over new areas at the end of 2024.
Because of the intensified violence, thousands of people have had to flee their homes.
