The alliance of left-wing parties wants to reinstate this mechanism abandoned in 1983, and rightly so according to many economists. Read our analysis.
The vote for the presidency of the Assembly takes place this afternoon
The new hemicycle of the Assembly, more fragmented than ever, meets for the first time this Thursday to elect its president, with great uncertainty over the outcome of a vote that could outline the outline of a government coalition.
From 3pm, three rounds may be necessary to decide between the candidates, as there are so many unknowns in this Assembly divided into three blocs – New Popular Front, presidential camp and National Rally – and where the right and Liot’s independents could play the role of arbitrators. The declared candidacies are those of the outgoing president, Yaël Braun-Pivet (Ensemble) supported by the Modem, the centrist Charles de Courson, André Chassaigne for the NFP, Naïma Moutchou (Horizons), Sébastien Chenu (RN) and Annie Genevard or Philippe Juvin on the LR side.
After the perch, the strategic positions of the Assembly will be at stake on Friday: vice-presidents, quaestors… Then the committee presidencies on Saturday, including that of the highly coveted Finance Committee, attributed to an opposition group.
Presidency of the Assembly: the NFP agrees on the communist André Chassaigne
Communist André Chassaigne was chosen Wednesday as the sole candidate of the New Popular Front to run for president of the National Assembly, parliamentary sources from the left-wing coalition told AFP on the eve of the vote. After lengthy negotiations, the Puy-de-Dôme MP benefited from the withdrawal of environmentalist candidate Cyrielle Chatelain.
Olivier Faure wants NFP vote on potential Prime Minister
Referring to the stagnant negotiations within the New Popular Front to propose a potential name for Matignon, Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the Socialist Party, proposed this Thursday morning on BFMTV to submit the candidacies to a vote. “When we can’t make progress, there is a fairly simple way in democracy to decide between candidacies: it’s the vote,” he hammered home.
On the Insoumis side, Clémence Guetté affirmed on Franceinfo at the same time that the discussions for Matignon were continuing. “We can succeed with the method that we used. We succeeded in the National Assembly, we will succeed in Matignon,” she said.
According to her, having NFP MPs vote would be a “somewhat demagogic” solution.
