MP Adrien Quatennens sentenced to suspended prison for violence on

Following a closed-door hearing at the Lille court, Adrien Quatennens was given a four-month suspended prison sentence for “ violence without incapacity committed by spouse “. He must also pay his ex-wife who accused him of domestic violence 2,000 euros in damages for non-pecuniary damage. A conviction which makes the political future of the lieutenant of Jean-Luc Mélenchon even more uncertain.

Adrien Quatennens had chosen to plead guilty in the hope of putting an end to the case more quickly, explains Valerie Gas, from the political service of RFI. In this procedure, the sentence, if accepted, is immediately homologated.

But his sentence to a suspended prison sentence and not to a simple rehabilitation course, as his entourage hoped, revives the debate on his ability to resume his activity as a deputy, the main issue for him, as shown by the first declarations of his lawyer at the end of the hearing who affirmed that it was about a ” solemn warning and that this condemnation did not prevent him from returning to the National Assembly.

A tricky case for politicians

Still, politically, things are not so simple. The hypothesis of a return of Adrien Quatennens is not unanimous within La France Insoumise itself, where for weeks we have been thinking about the conditions under which it could take place. And among LFI’s allies within the Nupes, this option is strongly denounced in the name of the necessary ” exemplary of elected officials. The resignation of Adrien Quatennens has even been demanded.

At a time when Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party is facing internal protests over the composition of the leadership, the management of the Quatennens case is likely to be particularly delicate.
