Mozilla and Industrial Light Magic team up to improve

What is the relationship between Mozilla, the publisher of Firefox, and ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), the company which, among other things, created the special effects for the films Star Wars ? An extension for Firefox! baptized Extended Color Managementit allows disabling the color management performed by the operating system in the browser.

Indeed, this management makes navigation more pleasing to the eye, but can cause a color fidelity problem, as shown in the example below under macOS.

In the image on the left, the color management by the OS results in a red that is not quite red (R). There is a bit of green (G) and a bit of blue (B). While in the image on the right, the extension achieves a perfect red. The monitor must then be correctly calibrated for the rendering to be optimal.

ILM explains that it needed this extension during the pandemic, because employees were then in permanent telework and needed to view video sequences using a browser, with the most faithful colors possible. Note that the ability to disable color management by the operating system is also offered in other programs, such as Photoshop.

Using the extension is very simple: just click on a circle at the top right of the browser window to change mode. However, Firefox must be restarted for the change to take effect.
