One person was killed and another suffered life-threatening injuries in a collision involving a motorcycle and sports utility vehicle near Port Dover on Tuesday night.
The motorcyclist died at the scene of the crash at Cockshutt Road and St. John’s Road East, said West Region OPP Acting Sgt Ed Sanchuk.
A passenger on the motorcycle was ejected and suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. The person was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital.
Police say the motorcycle was traveling westbound on St. John’s Road East at about 7 pm when it collided with an SUV traveling southbound on Cockshutt Road.
The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Police are continuing to investigate.
Roads near the crash site are expected to be closed for several hours for the investigation. These include Cockshutt Road between Lynn Valley Road and Concession 2 Woodhouse as well as St. John’s Road between Tisdale Road and East Quarter Line.
Sanchuk made special mention of the work of emergency crews who responded to the scene and the Good Samaritans, who stopped at the crash and attempted life-saving measures.
He also reminded drivers to use caution when out of the roads.
“Folks, if you’re coming up to an intersection, please do me a favour, check twice. It’s going to save a life. Make sure you take three or four extra seconds, it’s going to prevent you from becoming involved in a collision and it’s also going to prevent a fatality from occurring,” Sanchuk said.
“I don’t know the exact circumstances surrounding this particular collision, however, I just want to put that reminder out there to everybody.”
