In Greece, the opposition party Syriza tabled a motion of censure on Thursday, January 27 against the conservative government in power. In question, a management considered calamitous bad weather, after Greece was hit this week by a cold wave, marked in particular by unusual snowfalls and the paralysis of the capital Athens.
With our correspondent in Athens, Joel Bronner
Proof of the difficulties posed by the snowfall at the start of the week and the intensity of the criticism that followed, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis went so far as to express ” a personal and sincere apology “. Apologies reminiscent of those made in August, when Greece was, at the time, faced with a series of major fires.
3,000 motorists stuck for several days
This time, in addition to some power cuts, the most striking image was that of a motorway near Athens, where nearly 3,000 motorists found themselves stuck for several days due to snow. The ring road in question, Attiki Odos, notably connects the capital to Venizelos airport. More generally, faced with traffic made almost impossible, the government decreed two days off in the middle of the week to encourage residents to stay at home.
In the face of what some have called ” chaos », Syriza, the main opposition party, took the opportunity to drive the point home and table a motion of censure against the leaders, before the snow finished melting. A maneuver, which however has no chance of overthrowing a government which has the support of the majority of elected officials in Parliament.
