The mother of three, Maha, aged 49, died after plastic surgery at a newly opened private clinic in Malmö. Several suspected deficiencies have been discovered and now the family wants clinics to be audited more rigorously. – It is unacceptable that another mother or sister loses their life because of such an amateur clinic, says Maha’s brother, Ayman Kadoura. A month ago, 49-year-old Maha died after a stomach operation – so-called abdominoplasty – at a private plastic surgery clinic. She suffered a cardiac arrest. Neither her husband nor three adult children can stand up for an interview and her brother does not understand how it could happen. – It’s terrible, it’s terrible. She has been a very active and happy person and now she is no longer with us. We can’t believe it’s true, says Ayman Kadoura. The husband was waiting outside Maha had split stomach muscles but did not get help in public health care and therefore turned to a newly started clinic in Malmö. The procedure would take a few hours and her husband would come along. – He waited outside and waited and waited. Then he got worried. It should take an hour and a half, two hours, but he had to wait several hours. He is still waiting, says Ayman Kadoura. Several deficiencies at the clinic Several deficiencies surrounding Maha’s death have been reported. The ambulance staff notes that she was not connected to a defibrillator or other monitoring equipment when they arrived at the clinic and that cardiopulmonary resuscitation appeared inadequate. In another discrepancy report from the hospital, it is stated that the course of events raises questions about the quality of the post-operative monitoring. Exactly why Maha went into cardiac arrest is still unclear. The death is now being investigated by Ivo and has been reported to the police. The clinic does not want to appear for an interview and respond to the family’s criticism, but writes in an email that they are now examining themselves in an internal investigation to ensure that the anesthetist followed all routines. The family wants to see tougher scrutiny In July 2021, the law on aesthetic treatments was tightened But no special permit is required in Sweden to start a private plastic surgery clinic. It is enough to report to the care provider register. The clinic must comply with the various laws and regulations that exist within health and medical care. Maha’s family thinks that it is too easy to open a clinic and that the review should be much tougher. – It is unacceptable that another mother or sister loses their life because of such an amateur clinic. There must be requirements, stricter requirements on how they should behave and there must be a way to check them all the time, says Ayman Kadoura.
