A pregnant woman with a known bacterial infection was not medicated before her planned delivery at Östersund Hospital. The miss led to her newborn child dying of sepsis a week after delivery. Östersund’s hospital has now been criticized by the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo), reports local media.

The streptococcal bacterium in question is common among pregnant women and risks infecting children during childbirth. Ivo therefore states that patient safety was breached when antibiotic treatment was not given despite knowledge of the woman’s infection problem.

Örebro University Hospital has previously received criticism from Ivo since a newborn child died of sepsis. In this case, the mother was never tested for the strep bacteria while she was in the hospital.
