A woman in her 60s from Skellefteå was forced out of her home to settle in sheltered accommodation instead. The reason? She needed to escape her aggressive son, writes Hem & hyra.

Mother was forced into sheltered housing

A woman, her daughter and adult son lived together in a tenancy that the mother was contracted to. After the son used violence and threats against the mother and daughter, they were forced to move out of the home.

The mother is said to have tried for a long time to get her son to leave the home, but instead had to apply for a sheltered accommodation herself. This as the son has repeatedly been violent towards the mother and daughter. According to Home & rent he allegedly strangled, threatened and beat them both.

In addition to this, the son must have several previous convictions against him, in one of which he was convicted for stabbing a friend in the chest with a knife at the age of 15.

In October 2022, the mother felt compelled to take her daughter from there. This resulted in them both seeking shelter in temporary accommodation, while the adult son remained in the mother’s apartment.

When can the landlord terminate the contract?

The district court rules: The son must move

Although the mother tried to get the son to move, with the help of social services, they have not succeeded as he refused to move out.

After the mother tried to get help from both the Bailiff and the district court, she has now won the case against her son. The district court has ruled that he has no right to live in the apartment and must therefore move out and return it to his mother.

– The mother-child relationship makes it significantly more difficult to maintain boundaries over time. If you move home and then the adult child comes, it is incredibly difficult to keep the hard line, not to let in and open the door. Regardless of how serious the violence has been, says Bridget Stehagdirector of operations for Acta women’s shelter for Hem & rent.

Whether or not the mother has yet regained her home and managed to get the adult son out is not known at this time.
