Morton Avenue is about to become Morton Avenue West.

City councilors endorsed the name change at an Oct. 15 committee meeting. The change will affect 94 homes and an elementary school. The decision is expected to be approved at the Oct. 29 city council meeting.

Morton Avenue is a residential area that runs from West Street to North Park Street. Morton Avenue East goes from West Street to Wayne Gretzky Parkway.

“This will stop truck drivers, who just punch into their GPS which, unfortunately take them into a residential neighborhood,” Coun. Greg Martin (Ward 3) said at the Oct. 15 meeting. “That’s not where they want to go.

“They actually want to go to the industrial area on Morton Avenue East – on the other side of West Street.”

Martin said he hopes the change will alleviate the large number of transport trucks needlessly going into a residential area and causing problems for the truck drivers and residents.

The change will make a lot of people happy, Martin said.

City officials say it will cost about $1,000 to replace and install new street signs that include the directional suffix “West.”

Coun. Michael Sullivan (Ward 1) spoke in favor of the change.

“This is going to generate some clarity for people coming into our city,” Sullivan said.

Earlier this year Sullivan successfully advocated to have Longboat Run in Ward 1 changed to Longboat Run East. The change was needed to distinguish the street, which runs from Hunter Way to Conklin Road, from Longboat Run West, which runs from Conklin Road to Gillespie Drive.

The previous lack of clarity caused issues for couriers leaving packages at wrong addresses leading to complaints from residents.
