Morocco holds its breath

For four days, the country has been hanging on to the fate of little Rayan. This 5-year-old boy fell into a deep well dug in his village in the north of the country. Bulldozers are digging in an attempt to recover the child in time, in a case watched by thousands of people in Morocco and beyond.

The eyes of Moroccans have been trained since Tuesday on the village of Ighrane and the 32m deep hole in which little Rayan fell. The child accidentally fell into this dry and difficult to access well, the diameter of which does not exceed 45cm.

The rescuers cannot go down directly and the hole cannot be widened because of a high risk of a landslide. The bulldozers are therefore at work, almost day and night, to dig nearby. They have almost reached the 30m mark and are preparing to drill a horizontal breach towards the shaft.

The case fascinates everyone Morocco. On social networks the hashtag #saverayan is among the country’s top trends on Twitter. In France also, the name of the young boy has appeared in the most commented subjects. Thousands of Internet users follow the newspapers live and many people have even come to the scene, sometimes hampering the emergency services.

Personalities were moved by the fate of Rayan. International footballers, for example, broadcast messages of solidarity. Even neighboring Algeria, yet often a rival, is also experiencing a solidarity campaign to save the young boy.

Water and oxygen were sent through tubes to the bottom of the well. A medical team and even a helicopter are on site to take care of the child even if for the moment, it is not known if he is still alive.
