Moroccan Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali won a second world championship title in the 3,000m steeplechase on Tuesday in Budapest, beating Lamecha Girma. However, the Kenyan Girma arrived having signed a new world record at the Charléty stadium on June 9th.
After silver in London in 2017, bronze in Doha in 2019 and gold in Eugene (Oregon, USA) in 2022, this is the fourth consecutive world medal for the 27-year-old Moroccan.
In 8’03”53, he had to work on the last lap to get ahead of Girma (8’05”44), who had broken the world record for the specialty in Paris at the beginning of June (7’52” 12), and adorns itself with silver again after the Worlds in Doha, Eugene and the Olympic Games.
Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot won bronze (8”11’98) after a crazy race. He had an extraordinary last lap. He fell heavily on the first obstacle of his last lap, allowing Leonard Bett to pick up. But Kibiwot gritted his teeth and defended his charm tooth and nail until the finish line.
