Since 2021, over 1,300 unmarked graves have been found at boarding schools in Canada. The majority of schools were run by the Catholic Church, with the stated aim of “assimilating” the children.
About 150,000 indigenous children were forced to attend the schools between 1831 and 1996. Many suffered neglect and abuse, according to a truth commission.
