Another 93 unmarked children’s graves may have been found near a former aboriginal boarding school in the western Canadian province of Saskatchewan, according to local authorities. It is said to be about graves for 79 children and 14 infants.
Since 2021, over 1,300 unmarked graves have been found at boarding schools in Canada. The majority of schools were run by the Catholic Church on behalf of the Canadian authorities, with the stated aim of “assimilating” the children.
About 150,000 indigenous children were forced to attend the schools between 1831 and 1996. There, many of them suffered neglect and abuse, according to a truth commission.
