Among other things, the late opposition politician Aleksei Navalny has been proposed as the recipient of the Peace Prize, but he probably won’t get the prize because of the Nobel Committee’s practices.
At least 286 people or entities are nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, reports Reuters.
The most famous of the candidates are, among others, the Secretary General of the UN António Guterresthe Pope Francis and British naturalist David Attenborough.
In addition, the experts have listed the International Court of Justice, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) as early favorites.
According to experts interviewed by Reuters, awarding UNRWA with the peace prize could arouse opposition, because at the beginning of the year those that have become public according to the information, some of the organization’s employees are suspected of participating in the attack on Israel by the extremist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023.
In addition, the early favorites are the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
Navalnyi died in February in a Siberian prison, so he is unlikely to receive the award. The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded posthumously.
Zelensky’s victory is also unlikely because he leads a country at war.
The Nobel committee may also decide that no one will be awarded this year.
This has happened 19 times in Nobel history. The last time the Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded was in 1972.
– Maybe this year the Nobel committee should not award the peace prize and draw the world’s attention to the wars going on in different parts of the world, said the director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Dan Smith According to Reuters.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to an Iranian human rights activist For Narges Mohammad.
Nobel Prizes will be shared 7.–14. October The Peace Prize will be awarded on Friday, October 11.
