In Indonesia, at least more than 160 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured in the earthquake that shook the island of Java, said the governor of West Java Ridwan Kamil for news agency AFP.
According to the authorities, hundreds or even thousands of houses have been destroyed in the earthquake.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6. Its center was located in West Java near the city of Cianjur, a hundred kilometers south of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
According to the local authorities, many villages around Cianjur have not yet been reached at all, so it is possible that the number of victims will rise considerably. More injured people are brought to hospitals all the time.
– Most of the injured have fractures because they were in the collapsed buildings, said the head of the local administration of Cianjur Herman Suherman in a television interview.
The Indonesian Seismology Department warned residents of possible aftershocks.
– We urge all people to stay outside the buildings due to possible aftershocks, said the director of the Indonesian Meteorological Department Dwikorita Karnawati.
Indonesia is located at the junction of the Pacific continental plates, so earthquakes are relatively common. In January last year, two hundred people died in an earthquake on the island of Sulawesi and thousands lost their homes.
