More than 1,300 critically endangered snails were released onto the island | News in brief

On Saturday, 1,329 endangered snails were released to the Desertas Islands in the North Atlantic, reports BBC.

Conservationists had found a small population of snails near Madeira that were thought to be extinct.

The group took the 200 snails they found to zoos in Britain and France. Zoos created living conditions suitable for pea-sized snails to grow. The stock of the sport revived.

Now the snails have been released on Bugio Island, which is located near the snail discovery island. Conservationists are monitoring the snails’ adaptation to their new environment, the BBC reports.

– These snails are an important part of the islands’ habitat, commented the director of the British Chester Zoo.
