At least 37 people were killed in an attack on a displacement camp in Benue state on Friday. The victims are farmers and their families, who had taken refuge in a primary school, after being forced to abandon their land.

Conflicts between sedentary farmers and nomadic herders are particularly bloody in this region of eastern Nigeria, although the causes of this attack remain unclear.

On Wednesday, more than 50 people lost their lives in the attack on the community of Umogidi. On Monday, 47 residents of the Ikobi community were killed.

Incumbent Governor Samuel Ortom noted an upsurge in attacks since local elections three weeks ago.

The governor-elect, Father Hyacinth Alia, a Catholic priest, also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. They denounce the wait-and-see attitude of the security agencies and the federal government, accused of having allowed the situation to degenerate for years in the region.
