During the first week of August, the Coast Guard and the Maritime Police will carry out extra sobriety checks at sea. It will be the second control week of the year, the first took place earlier in July.

“In 2010, the alcohol regulations at sea were tightened. What we have seen since then is that sobriety has improved and that most people have accepted the legislation. But in recent years there have been many new boat owners who don’t always have a clue. It is mainly these that we want to reach out to,” says Stina Karlsson, maritime traffic officer at the Coast Guard, in a press release.

The checks are carried out via blow tests. If these results are obtained, breath samples may also be submitted to the Coast Guard’s ships or vehicles as well as coastal stations.

At sea, the same alcohol limit as on land applies: 0.2 alcohol per thousand in the blood.
