The number of snowmobile accidents with personal injuries increased last year, but fatal accidents decreased, shows a compilation from the police. In 2023, there were 367 accidents, of which three were fatal, and in the previous year there were 315 accidents, with seven deaths as a result.

The most common cause of accidents is collision with solid objects.

Daniel Pettersson, head of the traffic section in the police region North, emphasizes that accidents can be reduced with the help of checks, training and police presence, but that in the end it is up to each driver to act correctly.

“In order for snowmobile accidents to decrease, the individual must take more responsibility. The more scooters that are in operation, the more accidents,” he says, according to a text on the police website.

The accidents in Sweden mainly occur in the four northernmost counties and in Dalarna, during March and April, when the snow and ice conditions can be difficult to judge.

The police are asking the public to think about the risks ahead of the Easter weekend.
