More schools want surveillance cameras

So far this year, nearly 150 schools have applied for surveillance cameras, compared to the 80 or so applications received by the Privacy Protection Authority (IMY) last year.

Färjestaden’s school on Öland has applied for five cameras in the school yard.

— Last summer and autumn we had a lot of vandalism and, above all, a lot of arson. If they were to burn down this big school, it would be a disaster, says the school’s principal Ulrika Reje.

One reason for the increased number is that the school property company in Stockholm (SISAB) is to replace its old system with thermal cameras in order to have better monitoring of around 60 schools.
