The Armed Forces will increase its personnel and materiel as a result of the political decisions on increased resources. This is apparent from the supplementary budget documentation submitted to the Government.
“The reinforcement corresponds to a gradual increase of 400 professional officers, 500 continuously serving group officers, soldiers and sailors and 800 civilian workers, up to and including 2025, compared to already decided levels,” says Mikael Granholm, Director General of the Armed Forces, in a press release.
On the materiel side, investments must be made in several different areas, including qualified ammunition, naval clearance systems and artillery capability. In addition, the Armed Forces will take the first steps to strengthen the Swedish defense in the longer term.
In the autumn of 2020, the Riksdag adopted the so-called defense decision, which meant the largest increase in funding for military defense in a very long time. Subsequently, the Armed Forces has been promised further increased resources in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
