In the period from 2014 to 2023, a total of 877 Dutch people drowned. In three quarters of the cases, this happened in open water, such as a river, recreational lake or in the sea. In that period, an average of 27 people drowned per year who were not residents of the Netherlands, such as tourists or temporary workers.
More people drowned in the Netherlands than in previous years
