Among those now stripped of citizenship are several former allies of President Daniel Ortega, including author and former vice president Sergio Ramírez, bishop Silvio Báez and former minister Luis Carrion.
Judge Ernesto Rodríguez believes that the 94 contributed to economic sabotage of Ortega’s government as they have called for a boycott.
— The accused have carried out and continue to carry out criminal acts that harm the peace, sovereignty, independence and self-determination of the Nicaraguan people, says Rodríguez.
— Because of this, the accused can no longer be considered Nicaraguan citizens.
Since large-scale street protests erupted in 2018, Ortega has employed heavily armed paramilitary groups to crush the opposition and jail all leading opposition figures.
The Ortega government deported 222 jailed dissidents last week, revoking their citizenship after putting them on a flight to Washington.
