More and more food fraud is discovered • Chef Anders “Ankan” Lindén: “Among the worst things I’ve eaten”
The number of uncovered cases of food fraud has increased in recent years. A report from the European Commission shows that the authorities are discovering more and more food fraud. A current case concerns the suspected fraudster Amir Badeie, who was examined in TV4’s “Cold facts”.
Chef Anders “Ankan” Lindén was contacted by Amir Badeie and offered a meatball that was claimed to be 90 percent plant-based. His first impression was positive.
– The first time I put this meatball in my mouth, I thought wow! This is the best plant-based I’ve eaten, he says.
But when the collaboration with Badeie developed, suspicions began to be raised.
– We fried that and it was not a funny story. It was actually among the worst things I’ve eaten, says Anders “Ankan” Lindén.
Growing problem of food fraud
Food fraud covers everything from incorrect labeling of origin to diluting products with cheaper ingredients. According to food consultant Magnus Bergström, it is about misleading consumers for financial gain.
– It is that you intentionally notice errors with origin, replace products or dilute them, says Magnus Bergström.
A report from the European Commission shows that detected cases of food fraud have increased in recent years. But it is difficult to determine whether cheating has become more common or whether the authorities and companies have become better at exposing it.
– The secret number is huge because the business is hidden, says Kristina Ohlsson, head of advice and regulation at the Swedish Food Agency.
The scam exposed
In Kalla fakta’s new documentary series “Local Scandals”, Amir Badeie and his allegedly revolutionary mushroom protein are examined. The viewer can follow in the footsteps of Borås Tidning’s revelation about how the vegan chef deceived the media, researchers and other partners. He denies the allegations and claims he is the victim of a smear campaign.
Next week, the trial begins where Amir Badeie stands accused of several counts of gross fraud.
