More flooding is expected in southern Pakistan, where the water level in Lake Manchar has started to rise due to monsoon rains.
More rain is expected to fall in the region in the coming days, and authorities have urged residents in areas near the lake to evacuate. The rising water has reached dangerous levels and, according to the authorities, risks affecting protective dikes.
Fariduddin Mustafa, who is the coordinator of the Jamshoro district, says that an opening has been made in the dykes to allow excess water to flow out. Despite this, the water level continues to rise in the lake which is the largest freshwater lake in Pakistan and one of the largest in Asia.
In total, almost 1,300 people have died in the floods in the country.
The rainy season is coming to an end, but according to Abdullah Fadil, the UN agency Unicef’s representative in Pakistan, the damage left by this year’s monsoon rains could take decades to rebuild.
