More Finnish football coaches in Sweden Toni Koskelas head coach

Toni Koskela takes the helm of the Småland team that fell to Superettan. His contract with the club runs until the end of the 2027 season.

Toni Koskela41, is the new head coach of the Swedish football Superettan club Kalmar FF. Swedish club informed about it on Friday afternoon.

Koskela’s contract with Kalmar is concluded until the end of the 2027 season.

Koskela, who coached Helsinki Football Club to the Finnish championship three times, last coached Cyprus’ main league club AEL Limassol in January 2024. He was relieved of his duties in Cyprus after 13 matches.

The native of Helsinki has worked as Urheilu’s football expert during his coaching break. Before Limassol, Koskela coached Rovaniemi Palloseura and HJK’s reserve team Klubi 04 in Finland in addition to HJK. He also coached HJK in the European League 2022 and the Conference League 2021.

The traditional Småland club Kalmar FF was relegated from the Swedish premier league, Allsvenskan, to Superettan at the end of last season. Kalmar managed to play in the main series for 20 years in a row. He coached the team temporarily from the end of June Stefan Larsson.

– I am happy that I can be a part of Kalmar FF. Kalmar has shown great potential as a club in recent seasons. Now is the time for a new fresh start. I find it motivating that I can be part of that challenge and invest in building a strong foundation. I’m really looking forward to the fact that we can start working to take the club where it belongs and bring joy to the people who follow Kalmar, Koskela describes in the club’s press release.

There were three Finns in Kalmar’s ranks in the season that ended: the team’s captain Simon Scrabbtopper Ronny Jansson and played on loan in Denmark at FC Helsingör Saku Upper room.

On the same day as Koskela, on Friday, another Finnish head coach news was announced in Sweden. Jani Honkavaara starts his job as head coach of Djurgårdens IF.

The names of both Koskela and Honkavaara have been circulating strongly as candidates for the position of head coach of the Finnish men’s national football team.
