More dogs need to be relocated – the increase continues after the pandemic

Dogs who need a new home for various reasons come to the Kennel. The majority of dogs come to them through authorities.

– It can be for various reasons, for example supervisory matters, neglect and lost dogs, says Erika Garmelius.

At the same time, there are also many private individuals who do not have the opportunity to keep their dog and who turn to the Kennel themselves. But the increased pressure since the pandemic has meant that the Kennel cannot accept all private relocations.

– During 2024, we have in some cases had to say no to private individuals, we don’t have space. Then we do everything we can to find other approaches to help the dog.

Large increase in dogs that need to be rehomed

In recent years, the number of dogs that Hundstallet receives and relocates has increased drastically. In 2023 it increased by 45 percent compared to the previous year and in 2024 it increased by a further 20 percent.

– During 2024, we have had a constant full stable at all our facilities.

And they have also noticed another negative trend.

– We have also received more dogs that have an unclear background, meaning that we cannot trace the dog’s origin or owner.
