Every week, around four hundred Ukrainians arrive at the Jaarbeurs. It is the largest registration center in the Netherlands and since the outbreak of the war, around twenty thousand people have registered in Utrecht. “In the first six months we saw mothers with children. Literally only with plastic bags,” says Van Koppen. “What we have seen since the summer is that more and more migrant workers are coming.” About twenty percent of the people who are now reporting are war refugees and eighty percent are coming to the Netherlands because of a better future and employment prospects, the Safety Region said.
