The right-wing political profile Pia Kjærsgaard, who founded the nationalist party Dansk Folkeparti (DF), will leave the Norwegian Parliament after more than 40 years.
When Denmark goes to the next election – which will take place no later than autumn 2026 – the 77-year-old will not run again.
– You should stop when you are loved and respected, she says to Danish TV2.
Pia Kjærsgaard had previously worked in home care when she was elected to the Norwegian Parliament in 1984, then for the right-wing populist and more fiscally oriented Progress Party. In 1995 she left the party and formed the DF, which for a long time was one of Denmark’s largest parties with more focus on strict criticism of immigration.
Kjærsgaard resigned as party leader in 2012. Since 2018, the party’s support has decreased and it is currently around five percent in the surveys.

SD top Richard Jomshof tells in Quarterly Friday interview that he will be served with suspicion of incitement against a ethnic group, this after sharing satirical images online.
He will then leave the post as chairman of the Riksdag’s justice committee temporarily.
SD’s group leader in the Riksdag, Linda Lindberg, comments on the information in a statement to Aftonbladet:
“Purely in principle, this is of course a very important issue. Our freedom of expression must be far-reaching when it comes to the right to problematize, criticize and even parody important social issues in order to create debate.
At the moment, many question marks remain and we want to wait until the interrogation is completed before we comment on this further.
We of course respect Richard’s wish to temporarily step down from the chairmanship. While this process is ongoing, Adam Marttinen will instead shoulder the responsibility as chairman of the committee.”
According to Jomshof, it is about two satirical cartoons critical of Islam that he shared on the platform X. Aftonbladet has sought Richard Jomshof.
