Some films are ambitious and aim high. And then there are films like Cloud Atlas. The monumental, mammoth work of the Wachowski siblings was shot together with Tom Tykwer, breaks tons of boundaries and delivers almost three hours of the most epic sci-fi entertainment. It is refined by an extremely top-class cast, but the big success was not achieved.

The film’s tagline describes the big picture best: Everything is connected. To understand the full extent of these connections, you’ll probably have to watch the best-selling film adaptation more than once. It consists of six different time strands and stylistically different stories that span over 600 years, but are still interwoven with each other.

  • On the one hand, there is the historical drama that brings us into the year 1894 kidnapped and, above all, told by Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgess). He sails on a ship through the South Pacific and gets to know the people there and their problems. He records his story in a diary.
  • Then there is the young musician Robert Forbisher (Ben Whishaw). He writes a year 1931 on his Cloud Atlas Sextet, but the piece of music also appears in dreams. The romantic musician’s letters later play an important role.
  • 1975 They are read by the journalist Luisa Rey (Halle Berry), who is also investigating the construction of a nuclear power plant, where there were problems and probably botches.
  • In the present aka 2012 A publisher named Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent) wants to bring his story to the people, but is threatened and mistakenly sent to a home.
  • In the near future of 2044 we deal with the clone Sonmi-451 (Doona Bae) and the question of her humanity. She has a very special favorite film, namely the film adaptation of Cavendish’s life story.
  • Last, but not least, we also see them Future of the year 2321. In this case, humanity survived an apocalyptic event, but was thrown back to the level of development of the Stone Age. Here Zachry (Tom Hanks) thinks about the evolution of society and revolutions.

    Despite the ambition, scope and cast, Cloud was Atlas unfortunately not a great success at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, a budget of $100 to almost $150 million compares to worldwide box office takings of just $130 million. That’s not enough to make such a big film successful. This idiosyncratic and extremely ambitious sci-fi epic is still worth seeing.
