Monster Season 3 casts the mother of serial killer Ed

After the gigantic success of Dahmer – Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer and Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, the third season of the Netflix anthology is scheduled to continue in 2025. The notorious one Serial killer Ed Geinwhich inspired films like Blood Court in Texas, The Silence of the Lambs and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, among others, has already been cast with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. Now the cast is being filled with other important key characters.

Ed Gein’s mother Augusta (the model for Norma Bates from Psycho) is to be played by a four-time Emmy winner, who series fans have long known as the cranky Aunt Jackie from Roseanne and Sheldon’s mom Mary Cooper from The Big Bang Theory.

Monster Season 3 on Netflix: Prominent cast addition for central main characters in Ed Gein’s grisly story

For Monster: The Story of Ed Gein, US actress Laurie Metcalf, known from Roseanne and The Conners as well as TBBT, was cast as Augusta Gein occupied. As Variety reports, that’s not all. Also Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville are supposed to be part of the story and are portrayed by Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams. Apparently, as part of the season, we see how the case inspired the filmmaker for his 1960 masterpiece about Norman Bates and his motel.

This isn’t Metcalf’s first time as the mother of a serial killer. She was already in the 90s slasher Scream 2 as the mom of one of the killers from the original film in order to help his successor’s murderous arms. She also proved what she can do as a dramatic actress in films like Lady Bird or, most recently, in the series The Dropout.

Who was Ed Gein that Monster Season 3 will be about?

Ed Gein was one of the most notorious serial killers in the entire criminal history of the United States. If only it had come out in the 1950s that he had killed (at least) two women, he wouldn’t have received much attention. Gein also stole several corpses from their graves to make bizarre household items out of skin and bones. No wonder he inspired horror icons like Leatherface and Buffalo Bill.

In the past he has been portrayed by, among others, Steve Railsback in the true crime film Ed Gein: The Wisconsin Killer and Dan Davies in Ed Gein: The Musical.

When does the monster season about Ed Gein start on Netflix?

According to What’s on Netflix, filming for Season 3 of Monster will begin in October this year. With a start ahead Fall 2025 however, is not to be expected. Season 2, which deals with the Menendez brothers who murdered their parents in the 80s, has been online since September 2024.

Incidentally, season 3 will not be the first time that we meet Ed Gein in the Netflix series: Shane Kerwin portrayed him in an episode in the first season about Jeffrey Dahmer.
