Many players in the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta on Steam are presented with graphics that you would actually expect from a game on the PS2. Developer Capcom reacts to the technical problems with the demo with a short statement.
What’s wrong with the graphics on Steam? In both the Community Hub on Steam and Reddit, players share screenshots of very abstract models with low polygon density. So the actually very detailed 3D models don’t come into their own in the game.
The problem with the models, which are more reminiscent of the beginnings of 3D graphics in gaming, affects not only the monsters in the game, but also human characters.
Statement from Capcom about technology on PC
What does Capcom say about this? In a post on X, the developers refer to their Steam guide. However, one problem is directly addressed by the developers:
The issue that afterimage noise occurs in certain environments when frame generation is enabled is resolved in the full version of the game, which is already in an improved state compared to the beta test.
Frame generation is used in Monster Hunter Wilds to give players an FPS boost. The game’s fairly high system requirements were also made assuming that this technology was enabled.
Players take it with humor
How do the fans react to the technical condition of the demo? The broken models and performance issues don’t leave the best first impression of Monster Hunter Wilds. However, many people don’t let the technical difficulties spoil their fun.
When asked what kind of monster the Reddit user is fighting here (actually it’s a chatacabra), answers like:
Another Reddit user went above and beyond and killed all the monsters there were to hunt in the beta, despite the low-poly models. In the following clip he can be seen fighting a Rey Dau.
There’s even some initial fanart from people to “appreciate” these models. Here, a user on Reddit shared his interpretation of the “Origami” Rey-Dau. The Rey Dau is one of the new monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds and is the hardest fight in the beta.
Some users on Reddit would like these models to make it into the final game as an option in the game settings. Even if they look strange, they don’t make Monster Hunter Wilds unplayable. And in the end the models exude a certain charm.
It’s almost a shame that we only got to experience four of the new origami-style monsters. Capcom will probably have fixed this glitch by the time the game is released on February 28, 2025.
