Sixteen projects in fifteen municipalities have received money for preventive measures against natural disasters in built-up areas, writes the Swedish Agency for Community Safety and Preparedness (MSB) in a press release.
Most of the municipalities were granted money for measures against floods. Other projects that received funds were aimed at preventing landslides. The municipalities can receive up to 60 percent of the estimated cost of the project.
“Climate change means that preventive work is becoming increasingly important. Everyone with a responsibility needs to identify risks and take measures to prevent accidents and other negative climate effects, as far as possible,” says Ida Axelsson Wall, coordinator and administrator at MSB, in the press release .
The largest grant was granted to Kristianstad: SEK 80 million for a pumping station to prevent floods. Mölndal and Vellinge received SEK 37 and 36 million respectively, also for flood protection. Eskilstuna received SEK 24 million to replace a dam facility.
The allocation for the grant has varied over the years, but was increased last year to just over SEK 500 million. This year, the number of application opportunities will also be increased to two.
