Last year, the government invested SEK 72.5 million in grants to the municipalities for work to help gang criminals who want to drop out.

But the money is not enough in the long run, reports Ekot in Sveriges Radio after an examination. They were only enough to help one in four people who wanted to drop out.

The experienced gang expert and crime commissioner Gunnar Appelgren calls the grants “coffee money” in relation to how much a gang criminal costs society. Appelgren mentions 100 million for a 40-year-old gang criminal and half a billion for a group of 20-year-olds in the same circles.

In the mapping, Ekot has compiled the number of cases of gang criminals who want to defect by asking the country’s police regions about current cases. Last year there were over 650 and in 160 of them the municipalities concerned were granted money.
