Armand Duplantis is coming off his first loss of the year.
But he doesn’t just see it as a fiasco.
– Failures are important, he says.

Ahead of last weekend’s Diamond League competition in Brussels, everyone had been counting on a string of wins for Armand Duplantis. But it turned out to be a sensational fiasco, as he tore away at 5.91 and lost his very first event of the year.

Ready for revenge

Afterwards, the explanations were, among other things, that the track in Brussels was being rebuilt, and that thus affected his approach. In addition, none of his parents, who are also coaches, were there, and they tried to coach as best as possible over the phone – but the internet left something to be desired.

On Thursday evening, the big Diamond League final awaits in Zurich. Many are now excited to see if it was a temporary slip for Mondo, or if it is the beginning of a slump. The Swede himself believes that what happened is natural.

– We are human, we make mistakes sometimes. It really showed itself to me last week, he says at the press conference before the competitions.

“Failure is important”

Armand Duplantis also believes that it is possible to take good things out of a loss – something he has become good at over the years.

– Failures are important, and I have learned a lot during my career from my big losses. It is one of the most important things for me, to do the right things from when you are careless about it. Realizing what you did wrong and trying to learn, that’s important.

Armand Duplantis won the Diamond League grand final last year, and now he hopes to jump higher than his championship record of 6.06. He says he took the positives from the loss last week.

– It’s okay anyway, I’ve learned from it. I’m ready now.
