Stina Nilsson never succeeded in biathlon.
But now the new SVT expert Mona Brorsson is putting her foot down.
She thinks that the sport has a lot to thank Stina for.
It attracted a lot of attention when Stina Nilsson elected to leave cross-country skiing for biathlon in 2020. She was one of the world’s best sprinters but wanted to take on a completely new challenge.
Nilsson changes sports
However, Nilsson’s career as a biathlete was not at all what she had hoped for and the Swede had to struggle hard in the new sport. She came in with great motivation and a desire to really develop, but after four years Stina gave up.

This year she has changed sports again and this winter the 31-year-old competes as a long-distance skier. Stina Nilsson had to receive a lot of criticism during her time as a biathlete, but puts the former national team skier and teammate first Mona Brorsson down the foot.
The new SVT expert in the “Winter studio” wants to pay tribute to Stina and admits that the sport of biathlon has a lot to thank her for.
– I would say that what she did was raise the status of our shooting. She came in with so much energy and she was curious, it made everyone’s eyes open a little bit. You thought: “That’s right, it’s actually a lot of fun to shoot too,” says Mona in an SVT broadcast.
– Because it was during a time where we put a lot of focus on becoming better skiers. But she rekindled the spark for shooting actually.

Mona Brorsson also explains that Nilsson came in and raised the status of the entire sport by showing how difficult biathlon is.
– She raised the status of biathlon. You can’t say anything other than that precisely because she also showed how difficult it was. It wasn’t just about coming in and delivering results. She was incredibly humble and always pushed it. She helped raise the status for us, says the new TV expert.
The SVT colleague Bjorn Ferrywho has been open with his criticism of Stina, also admits that he would have liked to see her continue in biathlon.
– I had hoped that she would run for two more years because the championships are at a high altitude both now this winter and at the Olympics. She is better at high altitude and could really try all the way. So she maybe quit a little early, says Ferry in the television broadcast.
– But it is quite a given that long runs will suit her better.
