Moldova’s “first dog” bit Austria’s president

It is not only in the United States that the president has had problems with a dog biting him. Codrut, the dog belonging to the president of Moldova, is now getting his dose of the spotlight after nipping at Austria’s leader during a visit by him this week.

Codrut, who was adopted by Moldovan President Maia Sandu a few months ago, lunged at Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen when he tried to pet the dog.

The Austrian leader was slightly injured, and he dismissed the whole thing as not “half as bad” as it appears in video footage.

Van der Bellen says in a video on social media that he can understand that the dog was up in arms as it “was nervous because of all the people around”.

Codrut has received no official reprimand, and even received a dog toy as a parting gift from Van der Bellen.

In October, it was announced that US presidential couple Jill and Joe Biden’s shepherd dog Commander was being removed from the White House after a number of biting incidents involving employees and Secret Service personnel.
