Newcomer Modo continues his winning streak on home ice. The 3–1 win against Örebro was the team’s fifth win out of a possible six at home in Hägglund’s arena.
– Magical to be able to play in front of this audience. And fantastically nice to get three points. Maybe I was a little lucky with the goal, but all goals count, said the winning shooter Mikkel Aagaard to TV4 Play.
One of the SHL’s best home teams against one of the best away teams. It was set up for a real showdown in an almost sold-out home arena.
Hockey fever is high in Örnsköldsvik, but it was Örebro that started best. With long and heavy attacks, the närkings moved the game into the offensive zone, but they did not get closer than a shot into the post by Jonathan Lekkerimäki, despite their clear advantage in the game.
– We have a lot of time in the attacking zone and find some opportunities. It’s just a matter of getting the puck in the net, said Örebro’s Mathias Bromé to TV4 Play in the first period break.
Took the chance
Modo had great problems establishing any offensive play but got the chance in numerical superiority at the beginning of the second period. That chance was taken.
But a distinct pass straight through the defense box found Pontus Näsén to Riley Woods, who pulled straight and could see the puck go into the net to make it 1-0 for Modo.
– Of course nice. It is always fun to contribute to goals in pp. We have few shots on goal but a lot from outside. It’s important to get a little spin on them, goalkeeper Pontus Näsén told TV4 Play before the third period.
Modo bounced back
After Modo’s fine start to the middle period, Örebro came back more and more into the match.
– I think we are taking over more and more. We create long attacks but I would like to have a little more pressure on the box, said Örebro captain Glenn Gustafsson in the second period break.
That’s exactly what Örebro did just four minutes into the third period.
After a series of assists earlier, Hannes Björninen was then able to score his first goal for Örebro when he steered the tie to 1-1.
But Modo bounced back. When Örebro, for the sake of the unusual, scrambled to it in their own zone, Mikkel Aagaard was all alone with Örebro goalkeeper Jhonas Enroth and managed to wrangle the puck in for a 2–1 lead for the home team in the middle of the third period.
The final 3–1 then came in an open box at the end through Erik Jinesjö Karlsson.
