Mod for Call of Duty is discontinued one day before release after players diligently bought the game

Many players long for the good old days of Call of Duty. One of the biggest fan favorites is Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. Inventors wanted to bring back that era with a new mod for Modern Warfare Remastered and players eagerly bought it on sale. But one day before release, Activision pulled the plug.

What is the H2 Mod? With H2, a team of modders wanted to bring back the old Modern Warfare 2 in a new guise. H2 was planned as a mod for Modern Warfare Remastered, which was released in 2016. The team wanted to bring back the original maps, weapons and perks from MW2. In addition, there would have been new content in the form of skins or maps.

Many players liked the idea and recently bought the game during the sale, catapulting the old remastered version into the Steam charts. Unfortunately, the anticipation for the mod was in vain, because just one day before the release, the team had to stop working on the modification.

Shortly before release, Activision blocks the mod

Why does the mod need to be discontinued? As the team posted on X.com, all work on the modification has been permanently stopped. The reason is a cease and desist letter that Activision is said to have sent to the team.

The topic is also being discussed on Reddit and fans are angry and even want to return Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam. A lot of criticism also comes from the fact that you can only play the original MW2 on the now unsafe servers.

  • RJE808: Well, I guess I’m going to refund MWR on Steam now. Fuck that company, man. Holy shit.
  • Robospy1: I’m considering not buying any more CoD games now. I was going to get Black Ops 6, but now? Probably not.
  • BamzookiEnjoyer: I feel sorry for the people who bought MWR for this, I hope you all can get a refund. The project looked great and this is really sad
  • Users like tactikz4 even deliberately accuse Activision of having waited so long, because until recently there was a sale on many CoD games, and many interested people probably only bought them for the mod.

Activision already has a bad reputation among many players. A campaign like this will certainly not change that. Did you know about the mod and were you planning to play it? Activision is also not making itself popular with the prices for microtransactions: An item in CoD is more expensive than the actual game – now does what it’s supposed to after 3 months
