Mobility in front of the Green Zone in Iraq

Supporters of the Iran-backed Shiite Coordination Framework in Iraq launched an indefinite sit-in in front of the Baghdad Green Zone.

Iranian-backed Shiite group supporters gathered in front of the Green Zone and held a demonstration against the sit-in protest of Sadr Movement leader Muqtada es-Sadr supporters on the grounds of “protecting the constitution and order”. After the demonstration, the group started an indefinite sit-in in the same area.

Sadr supporters have been holding a sit-in in the Green Zone for about two weeks.

Shiite religious and political leader Sadr called for the dissolution of parliament and holding early elections in a statement on 3 August.

Sadr repeated this call once again, demanding that the judiciary intervene and dissolve the Assembly. Sadr also appealed to his supporters and demanded that the forms for the dissolution of the Assembly be submitted to the judiciary after filling in and signing.

Maliki, on the other hand, rested against Sadr’s demand that there would be no early elections, no regime or constitutional changes, and said that the decision on these could only be taken by the Assembly. The Assembly cannot convene due to the sit-in protest of Sadr’s supporters.
